Alleviate Stress: Pack More Effectively!

Moving is stressful. From finding the right apartment home, to packing, to finding help moving, to unpacking… That’s not even counting the stairs.

Apartment locators try to take as much of the stress off you as possible. But you can take a few steps to help yourself along the way. Here are some simple ways to pack more effectively from your friends at MoveForFree.com.

Don’t pay for boxes. Stores like Wal-Mart will usually give away boxes in the middle of the night. Liquor stores are also great sources for boxes. Just ask politely. You’ll be surprised.

Start planning a couple of months out. Begin going through your items a month or two before the move. Downsize where you can, donate clothes to charity, etc. Once that happens, start packing up the stuff you don’t use every day, like books. Don’t put all your books in the same box, though. They’ll be too heavy. Spread them out over a couple of boxes. (And don’t forget to tape the bottom of the heavy boxes.)

Label your boxes. It makes it easier for everyone involved, especially if you’re using a moving company. Don’t forget to write “Fragile” on the boxes that need it.

Don’t pack your cleaning supplies. You’ll need them at your old place.

Do pack an overnight bag. Set aside a change of clothes, your toothbrush, toiletries, etc. The last thing you want to do after a long day of moving is search through boxes to find stuff for a shower and a clean change of clothes.
