How to Save Money to Move Out

Moving in to a new apartment is fun. Moving out is not. Cleaning everything out thoroughly can be difficult if you’ve lived in your apartment for a year or more. Here are a few tips to get you moving in the right direction (and save money to move out in the process).

  • First, start to move your things out. If your move-in date overlaps before your move-out date, that is awesome. If not, start packing boxes with as much as you can. This will help you find more spots that need deep cleaning.
  • When you remove all decorations off the walls, check for nail holes. Fill the holes in with putty or a white bar of soap. You also may need some paint to match the color of the wall if you have any scratches or large holes.
  • Dust and wipe down all window seals, blinds, fans and lights, along with trim on the baseboards and walls.

  • In the kitchen, clean all appliances thoroughly. Your oven may be one of the hardest places to clean, so allow more time to let the chemicals soak in. The microwave and refrigerator should be deep cleaned as well.
  • Make sure to wipe down every cabinet and countertop in the apartment inside and out.
  • In the bathroom, clean the bathtub, shower, toilet and sink with your favorite cleaning solution. Don’t forget the cabinets and floors as well.
  • Use Windex on all the mirrors, windows and glass surfaces.
  • The last thing you should do before moving out is the floors. Vacuum all carpeting in the apartment. We also recommend renting a steam cleaner if you don’t own one. Sweep and mop the floors in the kitchen, bathrooms and hallways. This way the floors don’t get dirty again from the moving and other cleaning.

Make your apartment look better than it looked when you first moved in. If there are things that would bother you, try to fix them or call your maintenance crew and let them know.
