Packing Tips for the Procrastinators and the Unorganized

So you’ve found a new apartment home (hopefully using our apartment locator service). Now what? If you are anything like me then you always wait to the last minute to pack when you move. Then you are left with scrambling to get everything organized and end up accidentally packing the cat.

So here are the top ten packing tips for the procrastinator and the unorganized, courtesy of your friends at Move For Free.

  • Gather all of your packing material before you start packing. That way you won’t have to stop in the middle of your packing party to run out and get more supplies.
  • Before you start packing, sort out all the stuff you either want to keep, throw away, give away or sell if you are going to have a garage sale.
  • Make sure all of your boxes weigh less than 75 pounds. If they are more than 75 pounds they will be considered two-man boxes.
  • Pack your heavier items on the bottom of your boxes. That means don’t pack your box like this: light bulbs → bread → carton of eggs → brick collection.
  • On that note, pack your books in several smaller boxes. That way they aren’t too heavy for the movers to carry.
  • Stuff your crevices with soft materials such as gloves, hats, scarves, sheets and hand towels. That will save you some money on packing material.
  • If a box has breakable items it, be sure to label it FRAGILE. Also, label your boxes with the room you wish the movers to set them in.
  • Keep a screwdriver and/or hammer handy. There are always things you need to set up on your first night. You don’t want to go crazy looking for your tools when you’re trying to put together your furniture.
  • If you are going to use bags for your linens make sure they are the ones that stretch.
  • For the convenience of the movers and the protection of your belongings, make sure you tape all of your boxes flat. This makes them easier to pack in the truck and protects the precious belongings inside the boxes.
